Cream's tenure as a band was a mere two years, but the influence of rock's first "supergroup" has endured. Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton took the standard rock/R&B/blues format and combined it with jazz-style improvisation and psychedelic pop. Their live performances became legend, with long jams and extended solos showcasing their instrumental virtuosity. Cream broke up in 1968 at the peak of their popularity, having built the foundation for the blues-rock and hard rock to follow.
